How to Identify Your Dashboard and Factory Audio System

The dashboard, climate controls, amplifier and connectors can change the correct head-unit kit.

A vehicle name and model year are not always enough to confirm a head unit. Manufacturers can use different dashboards, factory screens, audio packages and connectors during the same production period. The first fitment task is therefore to identify the equipment that is physically in the vehicle.

Photograph the complete dashboard

Take a straight, well-lit photo that shows the complete current screen or stereo, the air vents, surrounding trim, buttons and climate controls. A close crop of the screen alone can hide the differences that determine the fascia and mounting kit.

Check the climate-control layout

Some products are supplied for manual air conditioning, while others are designed around an automatic climate-control panel. The shape and electronic integration can be different. Include the climate controls in every fitment enquiry.

Look for premium-audio branding

JBL, Bose, Harman Kardon, Sony and other branded systems may use a factory amplifier, different speaker wiring or a digital audio connection. Replacing the factory screen without the correct integration can result in no sound, incorrect volume or loss of fading control.

Identify original cameras and vehicle menus

Confirm whether the vehicle already has a reverse camera, 360-degree system, parking sensors or settings that are controlled through the original screen. A retention interface may be required, and some functions cannot be assumed from the model year.

Use connector photos only when removal is safe

If the original unit has already been removed correctly, photograph every plug and the label on the unit. Do not remove trim simply to take a connector photo unless the correct procedure is understood.

Australian-delivered and imported vehicles

An imported vehicle may use a different radio frequency, language system, connector or factory option from an Australian-delivered version with a similar exterior. State the market of origin when known.
